After nine years at the helm of YouTube, CEO Susan Wojcicki is stepping down immediately. Neal Mohan, the company's Chief Product Officer for the previous seven years, will take over for her.
She announced her departure from YouTube's leadership position on the business blog: "I've decided to step back from my role as the head of YouTube and start a new chapter focused on my family, health, and personal projects I'm passionate about." Wojcicki's new role at Google and Alphabet will be as an advisor.
Wojcicki praises Mohan for leading YouTube's music, premium, and shorts departments, as well as the wildly successful YouTube TV. When "the promises of AI" become a potential development sector, she also mentions that Mohan has managed the company's Trust and Safety team.
Throughout Wojcicki's time at YouTube, the company has come under fire for its policies on hate speech, content moderation, and the spread of false information, but that era is coming to an end. In 2014, when she signed up, YouTube had just passed the one billion user mark, and "YouTubers" were still a burgeoning subculture. These days, YouTube has over 2.5 billion users throughout the world, and many content creators utilize their channels as their primary source of income.
Wojcicki, who is a friend of Google's co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, was one of the company's earliest employees and, in her words, "managed marketing, co-created Google Image Search, led Google's first Video and Book search, and early parts of AdSense's creation, worked on the YouTube and DoubleClick acquisitions, served as SVP of Ads," before taking over as YouTube's CEO.
